Black ‘Cat’ Friday – Are You Superstitious?

black cat stare

Black ‘Cat’ Friday got us thinking about superstitions and there are many superstitions from around the world when it comes to cats. Here are a few that raised some eyebrows in the Catipilla office (particularly as we own a black cat!).

England – a black cat crossing your path is good luck.

USA – a black cat crossing your path is bad luck.

Russia – if you are moving home, always let your cat in first for good luck.

Ireland – to kill a cat brings 17 years of bad luck.

Italy – to hear a cat sneezing is good luck.

Japan – if your cat is washing her face, a visitor will arrive shortly.

Wales – if a woman accidentally steps on a cat’s tail she will not be married that year.

France – it’s bad luck to cross a stream carrying a cat.

India – grey cats are lucky.

Scotland – a strange black cat in your porch is a sign of forthcoming wealth and prosperity.

Indonesia – wet cats make it rain!

Iran – eating cat’s hair will lead to madness.

Netherlands – cats can spread gossip so are not allowed in rooms when private family conversations take place!

Romania – if a cat jumps over a corpse, the corpse will become a vampire.

Norway – if you stare deep into a cat’s eyes you can see fairies.

China – cats can see ghosts and will protect humans from evil spirits!

Buddhists – A light coloured cat will bring silver to the home. A dark coloured cat will bring gold to the home.

So, there you have it. In the main it seems that cats get a good rap when it comes to superstition (which is exactly how we think it should be).
